The History Of The Amherst Group
“The quality of our service is defined by the people in our employ”
Amherst Crane Rentals was founded in 1962 by Fitzroy (Roy) Welstead, assisted by
his wife Rene during the construction boom of the early 1960’s; a time when Toronto
and southern Ontario experienced tremendous growth. Roy introduced it’s sister
company, Amherst Concrete Pumping in 1968.
Gradually a succession of the Welstead children joined the company; first the eldest
son David, who was a pioneer in the concrete pumping industry, followed by son Terry,
daughter Valerie (Brennan) and youngest son Jonathan. Together they rose from a
fledgling Canadian enterprise into a company that has become one of Ontario’s
renowned and most successful companies in the equipment rental industry.

With A Goal To Remain the Best...
Amherst promotes the safe growth and development of the
industry & the regions they serve. They not only provide
equipment service crucial to the successful operations of
their customers, they are also a teaching company whose
management believes in assisting their employees to become
an integral part of their industry.
In keeping with their historic visionary and entrepreneurial
attitude, David, Valerie, Terry & Jonathan have encouraged
the next generation of Welstead children to participate in the
industry.
With the expansion of the company to new locations in
Niagara, Barrie, Trenton and Brampton, Ontario, Amherst’s
need for skillful new partners will be equally as critical to
their continued success as the need for loyal & skilled
operating engineers.
The success of the Welstead family lies in their recognition
of the importance of each and every member of their organization,
and their knowledge of all facets of the industry.
